Any visitor to Funchal should take a ride in the cable car up to Monte to appreciate the wonderful views of the port and harbour of this pretty sub-tropical island.
It’s suitable for young and old alike; you just need to have a bit of a head for heights. The ride takes 15 minutes and allows enough time to take some stunning photographs.
Monte itself has not much to offer – unless you wish to wander round a botanical garden (charges apply). Instead, you may like to stroll along the cobbled walk and make your way to the café under the lime trees. Virtually traffic-free and lazily quiet, enjoy a cup of tea with only the resident elderly dog for company.
Unless it’s peak season, you are unlikely to have to queue for a car going back as they run every minute through the day.
